Packing Essentials: The Packable Down Jacket
I sat at a patio table in Ljubljana, Slovenia in early October people watching, sipping my cocktail. After some musing and mental counting I tweeted out, “If you’re not wearing a puffer jacket, did you really even visit Europe in the fall?” It felt like every other person had one on.
But for good reason, a packable down puffer jacket is a great cold weather travel option. It’s lightweight and warm and packs down into a fraction of its full blown size.
The ultimate layer piece, packable down puffer jackets roll or fold up into mini sizes for easy packing, and are warmth masters.
If you get one that comes with its own compression sack you can even make it work overtime as a pillow or lumbar support on a plane or bus.
One of the things I first look at when considering a packable puffer jacket is the contents of the filling – down vs. polyester. Down is super warm but will retain moisture if you’re doing an activity where you’ll sweat. For walking around European Christmas markets or strolling city streets, I’d opt for down. If you’re going hiking or some other strenuous activity, opt for a moisture wicking polyester.
I’ve picked out a few of my favourite options if you’re looking to add a packable down jacket to your travel packing list.
Uniqlo Ultra Light Down Jacket
The Ultra Light Down line is one of the classic winter staples at Uniqlo and my own favourite packable down jacket. It has a durable water-repellent coating and it’s designed for a relaxed, comfortable fit. It comes with a carrying pouch that also attaches to an inside loop. Matte finish looks great whether you’re playing sports or just hanging out. I love that it comes in so many colour options. Makes it hard to choose just one!
Lululemon Pack It Down Long
Layering season is here. Wear this Lululemon Pack It Down packable, travel-friendly down jacket on its own, or under a rain-proof jacket for added warmth. 700-fill-power goose down provides lightweight warmth. You’ll be happy with it’s wind and water resistance and its detachable hood. It also comes with a stuff sack for easy, space-efficient packing.
Patagonia Micro Puff Insulated Jacket
The best warmth to weight jacket Patagonia has ever created, the Micro Puff Insulated Jacket perfectly blends a super-lightweight shell with soft, compressible PlumaFill insulation to make it both an ideal insulating layer and a cozy outer layer. Windproof and water-resistant, the lightweight shell keeps you protected from the elements as you make your way down the mountain, while the insulation maintains its heat-trapping loft, even after getting wet and abused through seasons of use. Add on the stowaway left hand pocket, and this jacket is guaranteed to be your go-to for ambitious outdoor excursions and routine trips around town alike.
Michael Micahel Kors Packable Quilted Jacket
A lustrous sheen enhances this must-have Michael Michael Kors Packable Quilted Jacket. This packable design is crafted with a chevron-quilted nylon shell and features a built-in wind guard and a sleek, removable hood. It’s perfect for brisk days in the city and can easily fit into your favorite carry on for out-of-town jaunts.
Marmot Featherless Hoody
The lightweight Marmot Featherless Hoody features 3M™ Thinsulate™ Recycled Featherless Insulation that is made with 75% recycled loose-fill fibers that feel just as warm as 700 fill power down, but still perform in wet conditions. Angel-Wing Movement™ keeps arm movements comfortable even when this insulated jacket is worn over a base layer. This space-saving jacket packs into its own pocket.
Reitmans Packable Hooded Down Coat
The Reitmans Packable Hooded Down Coat uses chevron quilted stripes to create an hourglass silhouette. The price tag is also very attractive. Like many down coats advertised as packable, it comes with its own travel pouch.
Old Navy Packable Puffer
Hope you have a sense of adventure, ’cause this Old Navy Packable Puffer is itching to go places. And thanks to the lightweight, easy-to-pack shell, this baby is up for anything, capable of squeezing into the tiniest suitcase or mini carry-on bag. Wherever you go, you’ll be warm, cozy & stylin’ in those super-cute colours and you’ll be happy with the budget-friendly price tag.
