The Next Adventure: Alberta Bound

Calgary

Photo: U of L

As you’re reading this I’m probably 30,000 feet in the air off on my next adventure. I’m staying domestic this time and am headed to the land of beef, mountains and cowboys. Can you believe I’ve never been to Alberta before? Me neither. So I’m Alberta bound today.

I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with my best friends in Lethbridge before I head to Calgary and surrounding areas. I’ll be checking out some hip hotels, going cowboy boot shopping on Stephen Avenue Walk, and hunting down pumpkin beer. I can’t wait to photograph Banff, the Saddledome, and maybe some dinosaur bones. Did you know that Calgary has a regular lunchtime live theatre? That’s just quirky enough that I have to check it out.

To put this trip over the top I’ll be driving a Ford F150 King Ranch while I’m in Cowtown. There’s something so fitting about driving a truck out west. So I figure I’ll embrace the cowgirl thing and pack my plaid shirt, jeans, and big belt buckle along with my heels. I think a horseback trail ride in the mountains is going to be a necessary thing. Maybe I should pack some padded bike shorts while I’m at it? I’m a bit of a wuss.

Do you think real cowgirls will laugh at my straw Budweiser hat?

I’m travelling in between seasons – too late for summer activities, too soon for winter – but I’m convinced there’s still tons of cool things to see and do in southern Alberta in the fall. I have my fingers crossed that the Rockies may put off a fall foliage show. I’m excited to be able to mix urban and natural settings so easily too. I could shop at Holt Renfrew in the morning and be hiking the mountains at lunch. Just my style.

If you want to follow along with my adventures in real time be sure to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Do you have any Alberta tips for me?

Enjoy Calgary. I usually get completely lost when I drive there, but it is a nice city. My trips there usually just involve visiting family but there’s a good outlet mall (Cross Iron Mills) outside the city if you want to go shopping, and if you want a good restaurant recommendation I love the Dairylane Cafe.

Crossiron Mills was my first stop after I picked up the truck in Calgary! I was only there about 3 hours and still missed about half the mall. Must go back some day I guess. ;)

I also hit up the Chinook Centre and CORE downtown.
